This is a pencil drawing of a Beaverpond Clubtail dragonfly (Gomphus borealis) seen in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, PA in May 2012.

I’m still trying to figure out a better way to photograph my drawings without the weird dark unevenness on the paper. Compare this to more what it actually looks like (I laid it on top of my cat).

Baby Red-Eared Slider Turtle, Daniel D. Brown, 2012, pencil

My 4 year old nephew Max recently got into the habit of asking everyday when he gets home whether there are any letters in the mail for him. Also, his current nickname is “Turtle.” So I decided to include a turtle sketch in a letter I am sending him.

Here is his turtle:

Wooden Feather Earrings #4 – Cherry, Padauk, & Purpleheart

These earrings are hand-made, one-of-a-kind pieces made from cherry, padauk, and purpleheart woods. The colors are the natural colors of the wood (no stains or paints). These are finished with a food-safe mineral oil/beeswax mix.

This pair of earrings is available for purchase on the Laughing Mantis online shop.

The wood is initially cut to size and glued in the desired pattern. I then sketch out the design and cut it out with a scrollsaw. Finally comes a LOT of sanding by hand and then finishing with mineral oil/beeswax.
