Bookcase Side Table – Daniel D. Brown, 2018

I’d say that turned out pretty damned close to my original design! This was my first time making something from rough cut lumber. I designed this piece in SketchUp to sit next to our couch, be usable for drinks on the side and knick-knacks on the back, and hold all of Tamaryn’s cookbooks. I built it out of scrap lumber obtained from a furniture maker – these were his cutoffs. The tops are live-edge walnut, the base is ash, and the shelves are walnut and mahogany. The whole thing took roughly three weeks from start to finish. Much of it’s creation was documented with more descriptions on instagram.

Art All Night 2018!

Both Tamaryn and I participated in this year’s Art All Night, as we do every year. She entered her three feather drawings/paintings with a mahogany frame by me, and I entered my wooden intarsia Star Wars piece, “Jabba’s Palace“.

Pittsburgh/London Name Plaque – Daniel D. Brown, 2018

A few weeks ago some labmates asked me to make a name placard for their adviser/boss (my colleague and future boss) on his 50th birthday. I finally got around to trimming up some of the video I took (below). These are just quickly edited on my phone and will be incredibly boring for other woodworkers. It’s more for Adrian and others who don’t know what goes into this sort of thing. Happy birthday, Dr. Lee!
